Printed booklet version also available for £7-50 plus P&P - Click Here |
This resource is a scanned CD copy of the original reports regarding the colliery disaster in November 1895 (published 1896), where seven miners lost their lives. The CD contains two reports, eighteen pages combined, including two plans of ‘A Winning’ colliery. Both plans show the layout of the mine and the damage caused by the explosion; including where each man was found. The resource also includes ten full colour photographic images; some show the funeral cortege and floral tributes by the miners graves, other photos are of Blackwell in general and A Winning Colliery. The reports details the circumstances and conclusions regarding the explosion which occured in Blackwell’s ‘A Winning’ Colliery, near Alfreton, in Derbyshire ... on 11th Nov. 1895. Apart from the photographs, both CD & Booklet format, are facsimile copies of the original 1896 reports by Chester Jones Esq. (Barrister) and Arthur H. Stokes (Her Majesty’s Inspector of Mines). Both reports conclude the cause of the explosion as being an overshot of gunpowder, which had been fired to remove part of the mine wall, however gas or coal dust was ignited by the shot & thus caused the explosion, but evidence was not conclusive and the secondary cause could not be agreed upon by the inquest jury. Additionally the report includes the names of the witnesses called to stand before the inquest and also details the opinions of other colliery managers, from nearby mines. It is clear that anyone living or working at Blackwell, in 1895, would have been to the funeral … as the photos seem to indicate the whole area turned out to mourn the men who had died so tragically. |
