Message from Helen & Lesley Wilson at Photo-Ark.co.uk We are expecting Photo-Ark to become a massive success over the coming years and hope that people will donate hundreds of images to Photo-Ark. However, we have to be realistic and make some basic plans should the site get too big for us to cope. We realize that a big site will cost quite a bit of money to cover the day-to-day running expenses & should this occur, Photo-Ark would need to generate income to continue growing. This would leave us with a few options:
- We could produce book versions of the same images that are on the Internet …& sell the books via local bookshops & local family history societies etc…& by targeting those who do not have Internet access.
- We could produce a CD version of the archive for people to use at their own leisure.
- We could charge a small yearly membership fee for access to the online archive.
In the event that option (i) or (ii) occurs: - those who have donated images will get the opportunity to purchase books & CD’s at rock bottom prices by this we mean you would pay just enough to cover our production costs … but free copies may be given to those who donate multiple images ... & we will donate free copies to local libraries & family history societies as well. If option three has to be implemented, all image donors will receive half-price membership. We are determined that membership will be very low as we do not want to deter people from seeing, using & donating images... perhaps as low as £5 per year. I am sure you understand why I have to mention these possibilities to you now? I would not want to offend anyone by making them feel cheated or lied to… this is why we want to have free usage of all images & I hope you’ll agree. Photographs, postcards & computerized images have 70 yrs copyright on them & the reason why I need permission for anything under 70yrs. Your Agreement By submitting an image, it is understood the you agree to the conditions set out by Photo-Ark & that you will allow Photo-Ark completely free usage of the image(s) that you’ve donated... and that by doing this you’re allowing other family & local historians to use the image(s) for their own private research only. You, the image donor, will retain copyright in every other respect. Should a company, or person, show a great interest in your image - and state that they would like to use it for corporate purposes or advertising... we will contact you with their proposed offer. |
